Our Scout group was registered in July 1927
as 1st Weaverham Boy Scouts. It
was started by Captain A E Heald and Mr A C Chetwynd. It became a group,
with the addition of a Rover Crew (the section that was to become Venture
Scouts) in September 1927 and a Wolf Cub Pack in May 1928.
The change to Sea Scouts was made initially,
by the Rover Crew, with the
Scouts following their lead in 1946. (The story goes that the Rovers thought
the blue Sea Scout Uniform made a bigger impression on the opposite sex!)
Thanks to the foresight of the parents and leaders
during the early
thirties, the Group owns the headquarters and the land on which it stands.
The land was purchased in 1932 from Marbury Estates, for the sum of £40
and
the final cost of the building came to £434. 0s. 0d. This included the
building, heating, lighting and furniture. Over the years, it has seen many
users besides our ourselves. It has been used as a dance hall, theatre,
school and a cinema to name but a few.
The current group is made up of five sections
and boys and girls are welcome
in all sections. We were the first group in our district to accept girls
into the group when this option was available We are still the only
group in Cheshire to have a section for young people with special needs, based
at The Russett School.
