Cub Scout Leader
Jim Stelfox

The leader in charge of the Cub Section is called Akela and in the Weaverham pack Jim Stelfox is the Akela. He is assisted by Lynne Baird and they have helpers from the Explorer section who are doing work towards their Duke of Edinburgh’s awards.

Cubs are given guidance on ‘the meaning of being a Cub Scout’ and prepare for their investiture. When ready they will make a promise and agree to abide by the Cub Scout law.

A typical Cub night consists of the following:

The pack does the grand howl. This is how we open our pack nights, then the flag is raised and cubs go into their sixes. Sixes are groups of six Cubs which have a leader called a Sixer and a deputy called a Seconder. The Cubs will have a game that will be both healthy and demanding to test physical fitness and brainpower.

The first activity is based around one of the badges that the cubs are following, there may also may be a visitor or a trip somewhere local like a church or a fire station. The Cubs will also try their hands at arts and crafts with all sorts of materials. There are many badges that can be earned at home or at school.

The evening ends with a short game usually quiet, then the packs goes into its Sixes and the flag is lowered, symbolising the end of the meeting.

The cubs undertake a range of 27 badges from the Adventure badge to the Water Activity badge. There are also 5 challenge badges along with 3 group awards that can be earned. The highest badge they can earn is the Chief Scouts Silver Award which is presented at a special awards evening.

Every year the Cubs are invited to attend the group camp which takes place at various locations around the United Kingdom. This may be in indoor accommodation or in tents. The group camp gives the cubs access to a wider than normal range of activities and they also have the chance to meet the other group members, including leaders from other sections.
