This Committee is made up of the Group Scout
Leader, Section leaders and
parents or supporters. It has a Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. Section
Leaders are not allowed to hold any of these three offices.
The main responsibility of the Group Executive
is to look after the finances
of the group, ie., fund-raising and allocation of funds. The Committee holds
meetings, which are always friendly and informal, at least once a month. The
officers are elected at the Annual General Meeting, usually held in
April/May.
Why do we need to raise funds?
As we own our headquarters, we always need to
raise funds to help us
maintain the building structure, etc. This is getting more difficult as the
building is now over 70 years old. Vandalism is an ongoing problem. The
building has been subjected to many attacks over the last five years, the
final one resulting in the destruction of our boat storage and damage to the
interior of the hall following a fire.
Although much of the work to rebuild the storage
area was covered by
Insurance, it was the extra effort put in by our Committee and a small group
of parents which returned the building to its current standard. However,
fund raising has to continue, particularly as the cost of insurance is now
so high.
The future plan is to replace our wooden building
with a brick built
structure and the committee is aiming to secure Lottery funding to do this.
Our tents and boats and safety equipment need to be constantly updated, repaired and replaced. Many of our leaders very generously make their own equipment available to the group, as we do not always have enough to go round. Leaders provide boats, tents, cooking equipment etc., without which, our activities would be severely restricted!
The Executive Committee organises many successful
fund raising activities,
particularly the Burns Night Celebration and the Sale of Bedding Plants.
These are both very successful for the group. We appreciate that not
everyone has the time to attend Committee meetings, but would be willing to
help out at events or activities. Please let the Group Scout Leader Rob
Lloyd or our Group Chairman, Ken Baird, know that you are willing to help
and in what capacity.
We appreciate that demands are made on parents
from many sources, but please be assured that we do value your support whether
it is in the form of
offering help with transport to activities, donating prizes for raffles,
attending our social fund raising events or giving a little time and skill
on our ‘work days’.
